With the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act in 1995 there was not only a moral duty but a statutory one to provide access for people with learning disabilities. INTACT (The Intellectual Access Trust) believed that while issues of physical and sensory access were beginning to be actively addressed in public buildings, awareness of the importance of intellectual access was barely off the starting blocks.
The intention of this report was to produce some research and guidance which would move museums towards a more inclusive approach. INTACT hopes to encourage readers to broaden access to existing and potential user groups in museums, galleries and historic properties because embracing the principles in this report will result in a better communicated message to all visitors.
