Product Description

A full-size replica Isle of Lewis chess set and wooden folding board (replica pieces are from the British Museum collection).

The Lewis chess ivory and red/brown coloured pieces are of the highest quality with exceptional detailed and finish. The Lewis Chessmen are made out of polyresin - a crushed stone composite - that has the look and feel of stone, but the durability of a plastic.

The folding wooden chessboard is inlaid with a walnut & sycamore veneer and the two sides are bonded together with a black felt backing. This substantial board measures 50 x 50 cm overall with 2" (5 cm) squares, a 4.5 cm border and is 1.5 cm thick.

The Lewis chess pieces are among the best known objects in the National Museum of Scotland. The Viking hoard of ninety-three pieces, carved from walrus ivory and probably made in Scandinavia in the 12th century, were found some 700 years later in a sand-dune at Uig on the island of Lewis in 1831. The hoard contained four distinct sets with traces of dark red colouring on some of the pieces. Eleven pieces are currently owned by National Museums Scotland and the remaining eighty-two are in the British Museum.
