Monarch of the Glen was painted by the English painter Sir Edwin Landseer in 1851.  From the 1840s, he produced a series of intricately observed studies of stags from trips to the Scottish Highlands. A favourite of Queen Victoria, Landseer become famous for his paintings and drawings of animals. Monarch of the Glen is part of the Diageo collection and is on permanent display in the National Museum of Scotland.
