The Lewis Chess Pieces

Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis but dating back to the 12th century, the Lewis Chess Pieces recall a time when the Hebrides belonged to Scandinavia and the Vikings. The pieces are known around the world and are one of our museum's most popular exhibits.
